The casino game baccarat (pronounced “baa-kr-aa”) is based on a centuries old card game originating in Italy. It is commonly associated with the rich and popularly portrayed as a favourite of Ian Flemming’s James Bond character in many of the 007 films. Yet, as much as it is associated with elegance, prestige and a brilliant spy, baccarat is a relatively simple game to play.
New to baccarat? We’ve included the basics below to start you on your learning journey.
Here’s how to play the baccarat casino game:
Whether it’s at a land-based casino or an online casino in Canada, players participating in a baccarat game do not get their own cards. No matter how many players are at a baccarat table, only two hands of cards are dealt - the Player’s hand and the Banker’s hand. The objective is to bet if the Banker’s hand or the Player’s hand will win or if they’ll tie. The hand with the highest number of points out of a possible 9 wins.
You can make one of three betting options in a baccarat casino game – 1. Bet the Banker’s hand will win - 2. Bet the Player’s hand will win - 3. Bet the hands will tie. Players place their bets before the cards are dealt. Once bets are placed, a total of four cards are dealt. The dealer places the first card in the Player box, the second card in the Banker box and repeats the process so that each hand has a total of two cards.
If the points total of the first two cards is 8 or 9 for either hand, this is a “natural win”, and the game is over. If both hands do not total 8 or 9, depending on their totals, the dealer may draw one extra card on one or both hands. Neither hand ever gets more than three cards. If there is a tie, neither hand wins nor loses. When the game is over, the dealer collects the lost bets and pays the winnings. A winning bet on the Banker’s hand pays 1 to 1 (even money). A winning bet on the Player’s hand pays 1 to 1. A winning bet on a tie pays 8 to 1. The dealer takes a 5% commission on wining bets on the Banker’s hand only, which is how the casino makes money on baccarat.

A big part of knowing how to play baccarat is understanding how baccarat card points and third card rules work. No worries, though! We promise, casino game baccarat rules are super clear.
Here’s how to calculate hand values in baccarat to score up to 9 points:
King, Queen, Jack and Ten cards are worth 0 points.
Numbered cards 2 – 9 are worth their face value.
Ace cards are worth 1 point.
If points in a hand reach 10 or higher, only the second digit of the number represents the total point value. For instance, if a hand has a 5 and a 7, the total is 12, so the hand is worth 2.
Third card rules for the Player and Banker hands:
For the Player, a third card is drawn only if the hand value is 0 to 5 and the Banker does not have a natural win - 8 or 9 points. In all other cases, the Player’s hand stands.
For the Banker, there are more third card drawing rules due to the Player having the opportunity to draw a third card first. See table below:
Since there are specific rules as to when a third card will be dealt to the Player or the Banker hand, baccarat strategy guides, odds calculators and rule books are not necessary to better understand the game. Pretty cool, eh?
Just remember, knowing how to play, understanding the rules of the game, or employing a strategy does not guarantee a win, ever. The house always has an edge, no matter the baccarat game, slots or any other casino games you play on our site. All games at PlayOJO are 100% based on luck. Never gamble more to recover your losses. Please play responsibly.
To play baccarat online with us is easy. 1- Sign up by creating an account with PlayOJO by entering in your personal details (we guard them with the highest security!). 2 - Make your deposit and claim our welcome offer (no wagering on wins and no strings – terms apply). 3 - Search for baccarat and choose your favourite from our options. 4 - Decide how much you’d like to bet and place your bet on the Player, Banker or Tie. 5 - Good luck and have fun!
Though it all boils down to luck, knowing how to play baccarat and understanding its rules can help you to make informed choices. While no win is ever guaranteed no matter the strategy you might employ, setting a budget, managing your bets wisely, avoiding riskier bets like the Tie Bet and consistently betting on the Banker, may improve wining chances in the long run.
Still, no matter how experienced you are at playing baccarat or the baccarat casino game strategy you might use, we can’t stress enough that no win is ever guaranteed.
Baccarat is a centuries old casino card game that originated in Italy during the 1400s. For all intents and purposes, baccarat is a guessing game. Your objective is to place a bet on which hand out of two (the Banker’s hand or the Player’s hand) will win or if the hands will tie. The winning hand is the one with the highest points out of a possible 9 points.
Some players of baccarat use charts, better known as baccarat scoreboards as a strategy to track and analyze their game to see if there are any trends that occurred in the past game rounds to help “predict” the next outcome. Reading the patterns of these charts takes practice and are typically used by experienced players. Just remember that if you choose to learn how to use these charts to track your play, while they can show a trend, they do not guarantee the outcome of the next game.
And again, the house will always have the edge and outcomes are 100% random and based entirely on luck. Never chase your losses, regardless of strategy or your skill level. Always play responsibly.
